Circuit-Bending is the creative, chance-based customization of the circuits within electronic devices to create new musical or visual instruments and sound generators.
It started out with classic vintage instruments, Casio SK-1 and an Alesis HR-16, taken into the lab and circuit bent. They were opened up, adding switches, hard-wiring new controls that altered them into tone monsters.
Once completed, they were sampled and multi-sampled into tube mic preamps. The switches and knobs caused the instruments to produce new textures, drones and multi-sampled pitches. The sounds that were produced were analyzed, mapped, tuned, and looped to create new, more flexible instruments in the digital realm. Synthesis was added: envelopes, filters, LFOs, and an effects engine. The result is 5 new Circuit-Bent Rack Extensions for Reason:
CB-1 Circuit Bent Brass (featuring the top brass and trumpet bends)
CB-2 Circuit Bent Drums (featuring the top drum and synth tom bends)
CB-3 Circuit Bent Keys (featuring the top piano and synthesizer bends)
CB-4 Circuit Bent Organ (featuring the top pipe organ and jazz organ bends)
CB-5 Circuit Bent Wind (featuring the top flute and voice bends)
You can also get all five in the Circuit-Bent Bundle.
All of these instruments feature a few standard waveforms but predominantly the sounds are tremendously tweaked but musical and flexible.
The circuit-bending community is a collection of creative thinkers, as are the members of the Reason community. We think differently and embrace sound design through various connections. Now these two worlds collide with these user-friendly devices. Each instrument comes with over 100 patches and combinators. Try it out now, free for 30 days, at shop.propellerhead.se.
